172 Orchard St, between Stanton and E Houston Sts
A Mexican restaurant has arrived on the Lower East Side; a Mexican restaurant that ‘Frisco would be proud to call its own. Well, perhaps that’s because it is.
San Francisco’s culinary wonder boy, Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese SF and NYC, opens Mission Cantina on Orchard Street.
The good: The corn tortillas and Oaxacan-style cheese are made in house. The rotisserie chicken is stuffed with rice and chorizo. Tacos are definitely on the menu with a range of choices from the traditional like al pastor and carnitas, to more out-there options such as chicken liver and beef tongue.
The bad:With only forty-one seats and more buzz than Miley Cyrus’ instagram, diners will wait, and wait for a minimum of two hours. Your TOWN concierge will recommend a few pre-dinner cocktail hotspots.
The ugly: Make sure to take your phone off silent. Put it on the highest ring. A missed call from Mission Cantina means a missed dinner at Mission Cantina. Lastly, don’t call them. They won’t answer.
