Is it possible to be a high-standards, results-driven leader while at the same time building an engaged, fun-to-work-with team?

A friend of mine tweeted a link to an article that answered the above question and I found it really interesting. I want to share this information with all of you.

The short answer to that question is a resounding “yes.”

To summarize the article, in their research, they discovered that those leaders who rated in the top 25% of both skills, ended up in the top 9% of all leaders! In other words, holding people accountable to high quality work AND building relationships with them led to higher productivity and a team that really loved their work.

Interestingly, the older the leader and the higher the executive level (which tend to be related) indicated that these high numbers would drop off. Perhaps that’s generational (Boomers vs Millennials), but more than likely is because we become more set in our ways as we grow older.

How might you be able to use this information to help you be a better leader creating an atmosphere of high standards, yet very relational? (Hint: one answer is below.)
