You should always hire a professional auto mechanic for brake repairs or engine servicing. However, there are some auto maintenance tasks you can handle on your own. Here, the team at A-1 Auto A/C Specialist & General Auto Repair in Honolulu, HI, shares some tasks that even those with minimal automotive experience can manage.

3 Car Care Tasks That Don’t Require An Auto Mechanic

1. Battery Cleaning

Corrosion buildup can hurt the performance of your car battery, but cleaning will put a stop to this problem. After removing the battery cables—take off the negative cable first—use a mixture of baking soda and water to clean the posts and a wire brush to remove residue from the battery terminals. Once they’re clean, rinse and dry them before putting them back in place.

2. Windshield Wiper Replacement

auto mechanicExposure to ultraviolet rays and frequent use during rainstorms will deteriorate your windshield wiper blades over time. To replace the old wipers, pull them away from your windshield and find the small tab or button on the bottom of the wiper. Push this to release the old wiper blade. Then slide the new wiper blade into place on the empty arm until it clicks on tight.

3. Air Filter Replacement

Changing your air filter can be accomplished in as little as ten minutes. After opening the hood, locate your current filter. Air filters are usually kept in a black case and held in place with metal clips. Open the case, carefully take out the old filter, and place the new filter in the same position. Close and secure the case, and you’re done!
