There’s more to sewing than a needle and thread, and truth be told, it’s not as easy as it looks. However, it’s a hobby that offers a bevy of benefits, and anyone can get proficient with a little time and patience. Follow these steps if you want to go from beginner to professional.

How to Sew

1. Buy a Quality Machine

Sewing machines come in all sizes, costs, and functions, so consider your budget and what you’ll be using it for. As a beginner, it might be best to start out with a simple machine. Contact a local seller and ask for their recommendation.

2. Learn the Parts of The Machine

sewingSit down and read the user manual for your new sewing machine. All devices are different, but they should all have a few parts in common, such as a spool pin to hold the thread, a bobbin binder spindle and winder stopper, and a presser foot to keep fabric in place. Most will also include a foot pedal to operate the needle.

3. Pretend to Sew a Straight Line

Secure a piece of fabric underneath the presser foot. Use the hand wheel to lower the needle into the fabric, and then press the foot pedal to begin sewing straight for an inch. Press the reverse stitch lever and sew backward in a straight line. Continue practicing until you feel you can control the machine.

4. Thread Your Machine

Place a spool of thread on the spool pin so the thread is released counter-clockwise. Wind the thread around the bobbin binder spindle at the top of the sewing machine. Insert the thread into a hole in the bobbin before wrapping it around the bobbin to secure it. Place the bobbin on the pin and lock it in place. Wind the bobbin until it’s full by pressing the foot pedal. Then, load the spool onto the spool pin. Wrap it around the thread guide and pull it down.

5. Try Sewing a Straight Line

Use another piece of fabric and secure it under the presser foot. Lower the needle into the fabric, and press the foot pedal to sew straight for an inch. Press the reverse stitch lever and sew backward in a straight line. Congratulations, you’ve learned the basics of sewing.
