Whether you totaled your car or your decades-old vehicle is simply on its last lap, it may be time to head to the scrap yard. Even if your car blows smoke or barely drives, you can make hundreds of dollars by selling it to a reputable scrap facility. Before you drop off your car, though, take time to make sure you’ve followed these steps.

Do

Remove license plates.

Before you sell your car to the scrap yard, you will need to remove the license plates. In many cases, you will need to return them to the Department of Motor Vehicles to cancel your registration.

Have your title on hand.

When you scrap your car, you need to cancel your insurance and transfer ownership of the vehicle to the junkyard. To do so, you will need to have a valid title at the scrap yard, as well as your ID. Transferring ownership of the car will help you avoid potential legal complications down the road.

Don’t

recyclingForget personal belongings.

From sunglasses to wallets and old mementos, people tend to store a lot of important personal belongings in their vehicles. Before you bring your car to the scrap yard, be sure that you’ve completely cleared it of all miscellaneous items. Take out garbage and items you don’t want, also, as salvage yards cannot take care of these items for you.

Give it away.

Even if it’s falling apart, the metal parts and pieces of your car remain valuable. Don’t take your vehicle to the dump or otherwise give it away. When you take your vehicle to a reputable scrap yard, you will receive a fair price for your car.
