Your fireplace was a lifesaver this winter by providing warmth and a cozy atmosphere to gather with loved ones. However, just like other parts of your home, it requires spring cleaning to get rid of dirt and grime that’s accumulated during the cold months. Below are four methods of fireplace cleaning to bring your hearth back to its former glory.

How to Erase Smoke Stains & Soot From Your Fireplace

1. Soap & Water

The effectiveness of soap and water will depend on how intense the stains are. You’ll also need an abrasive scrub brush and some muscle power. Douse the brush in soapy water, apply pressure to the stain, and scrub until the stain is removed. If you don’t have enough strength, you can purchase a brush attachment for a power drill and let the tools do the work for you.

2. Specialized Eraser

If soap and water can’t eradicate the stains, consider getting a soot eraser for fireplace cleaning. You’ll still need to use your own muscle power, but it’s designed specifically for the removal of tough smoke and soot stains. The advantage to the soot eraser is it’s relatively inexpensive, non-toxic, and can work on a variety of different surfaces, including bricks, mantels, painted walls, and even window shades. Rub it against the stain without water.

3. Spray Cleansers

Some of them require special steps to get maximum results, such as diluting the substance or letting it sit for a certain amount of time after applying. Read the directions on the side of the bottle before use.

4. Call a Professional

If you attempted to remove soot and smoke stains on your own to no avail, it’s time to call a fireplace cleaning company. They’ll have the tools and expertise to get rid of the most stubborn stains and make your fireplace look brand-new again.
