Food and nutrition myths cover the magazines, flood the internet, and fill the late night television slots.  They lead us astray from making the right food choices for our health.  It is hard to know how and where to begin.  Let’s simplfy that today and start with a few basic healthful eating tips to help establish new habits in your homes.

  1. Moderate Diet.  Plato once wrote “A moderate diet is a healthful diet” and I still believe this applies today.  Anything can fit, but how often and how much are the keys.
  2. Length of Ingredient List.  Glance at the ingredient list to what is in the food you are consuming.  Remember they are in order from the most to the least as the list goes on.  This where you can look for whole grains and minimal processing and additives.
  3. Honor your hunger and fullness.  Don’t just clean your plate, but savor and take your time with meals.  You must learn to recognize the feeling of satisfied, not full.
  4. Select whole foods as much as possible.  Lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and oil are readily available.  Many canned and frozen varieties are also great ways to get good nutrition.
