Contact lenses are a highly convenient optical choice for individuals who enjoy sports, physical activity, or the convenience of clear vision that’s unobstructed by glasses. But after getting fitted for these lenses by an optometrist, it’s common for new users to experience some trouble as they get used to the application. If you’re starting this new eye care routine and one of your contacts gets stuck, here’s how to mediate the situation.

How to Remove Stuck Contact Lenses

What Should You Do First?

Contact LensesWhen you’re having difficulty removing contact lenses, it’s natural to panic. This can make removal even more challenging. With this in mind, take a deep breath, remind yourself your contact cannot get stuck behind your eyelid, and do your best to remain calm. Next, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, as you may need to touch your eye for an extended period. After washing, let your hands air dry to avoid towel or tissue fibers getting onto your fingertips and into your eye.

To remove a stuck lens, close your eyes, and using your finger on the outside of your lid, feel around until you locate the contact. Look in opposite directions to try and get the lens back into position. If this doesn’t work, moisten your eye with drops before closing it again and massaging the lid. Should this process be unsuccessful, dip a cotton swab in contact solution and try to use the tip of the swab to reposition the lens and remove it.

If You Continue to Have Trouble, What Else Can You Do?

If your attempts to remove your contacts are unsuccessful, call your optometrist right away to schedule an appointment. With the help of an eye care professional, you can rectify the situation and avoid damage to your cornea.
