Mulching is an important part of all landscape design plans, especially for those who have flower or vegetable gardens. While most homeowners know that mulch is an organic compost material that helps promote proper drainage for seeds and roots, few are familiar with the nuances involved with installing it properly. While you can depend on your local landscaper to help you determine the correct mulching schedule and techniques for your yard, it’s helpful to have a basic understanding.

A Guide to Understanding Mulching

1. Timing Counts

The time of year that you decide to add mulch to your yard is important, as some months will lend to better drainage and easier installation upfront. Ideally, you’ll add your mulching material during the late spring. This is the perfect time of year because the weather is warm enough to allow the seeds to come through the material, but there is still enough moisture to provide the proper nutrients. You can also mulch during the winter if you plan to plant some new seeds ahead of time — choose a day during a dry spell as rain will disrupt the process.

2. Clean Out Old Mulch

mulchingIf you are adding mulch for a consecutive year, you’ll need to make sure that the old material is cleaned out before you add anything new. Mulch that has been piled on top of old material is less effective for soil drainage and can cause your plants to suffocate. Gently rustle and remove the old material and add a fresh layer adding more throughout the beginning of the season as necessary.

3. Adjust Thickness

One of the most common missteps in installing mulch is adding too much or too little at a time. A thin layer of mulch won’t do its job and will allow water to seep through quickly. Too thick of a layer of mulch, on the other hand, will stop water from moving through at all, causing your plants to dry up. In most cases, a layer about four inches deep provides the perfect amount of protection and drainage for your plants. Keep in mind that you should thin out the layer the closer it gets to the pavement, and add a bit closer to the roots.
