3. Adjust Thickness

Too thick of a layer of mulch, on the other hand, will stop water from moving through at all, causing your plants to dry up. In most cases, a layer about four inches deep provides the perfect amount of protection and drainage for your plants. Keep in mind that you should thin out the layer the closer it gets to the pavement, and add a bit closer to the roots.
