Many of the more widely accepted methods of getting rid of rats and mice, including poison and traps, may not always work. Some experts argue that this approach actually makes room for more pests to come in and exploit the same source of food and shelter. Humane ways of getting rid of these pests are arguably more effective. Dick's Fumigation Services, pest control and fumigation professionals based in Wailuku, HI, shares a few of them.

Humane Ways to Get Rid of Mice and Rats

Use Nonlethal Traps

Unlike glue traps, which injure pests and often force them to resort to desperate measures to escape, nonlethal traps do not endanger the animal. These traps often feature a spring-loaded door that closes once the animal enters the trap in search of food. Once the door has closed, you can take it outside to free the rat or mouse in the wild.

Seal Holes and Cracks

fumigationWhen mice and rats enter homes, they typically don't do so through the front door. Do a complete sweep of your house or apartment, looking for any holes or cracks large enough for rodents to squeeze through. Block these openings with caulk, steel wool, or another sealant.

Protect Your Garbage

Many animals will infiltrate a home because they catch the scent of the garbage inside. Make sure your garbage is inside a tightly covered can or bin. You can also disguise the scent of garbage by placing a sheet of fabric softener inside the container.
