Few things are as disconcerting as dealing with an overheated car engine and waiting for a towing company to arrive while you attempt to determine the source of the issue. There are a number of varying factors that could cause the problem, but luckily, there are a few things you can do to cool the engine off before your towing technician or roadside assistance arrives.

3 Reasons Your Engine Is Overheating

1. Low Coolant

Coolant is designed to help keep the engine at a safer temperature. If your coolant level is low, you’ll likely be notified by a light on your dashboard. If your engine is overheating, turn off the car completely while you wait for it to cool down, and then manually check your coolant levels. If possible, aim to keep a small can of coolant fluid in your trunk in case your car overheats. Wait until the engine is completely cool before adding coolant fluid to the radiator.

2. Broken Cooling Fan

towingA broken cooling fan is a more severe problem, especially when you're sitting in heavy traffic. The fan is mainly used to help keep air moving over your radiator when your car is stationary. In this situation, it’s important to remember not to keep driving with an overheated engine. Pull over as soon as possible and call your towing company.

If you’re stuck in traffic when you realize that you have a broken cooling fan, shift your car to neutral and gently rev the engine. This action will help move the necessary amount of coolant fluid through your engine and move air over the radiator.

3. Closed Thermostat

As your car heats up, your thermostat should keep track of the temperature. As the temperature rises, then, the thermostat should open far enough to allow coolant to flow through. If it malfunctions, it will stay closed and, eventually, your car will overheat.

If your engine is overheating because of a closed thermostat, try turning on the heater and rolling down the windows simultaneously. This will help cool down your engine enough for you to reach a safe place where you can stop and call a towing truck.
