Golf is a favorite pastime of many, but as with any physical activity, it comes with the risk of injury. Whether you’re a weekends-only golfer or you have plans to go pro, it’s important to understand the most common injuries and the measures you can take to prevent them from keeping you off the green.

Top Golf Injuries & How to Prevent Them

1. Golfer’s Elbow

Tendonitis in the elbow — more commonly referred to as “tennis elbow” — is one of the most common injuries golfers face. The tendons on the outside or inside of the elbow become strained when golfers lock their elbows rather than keeping them straight but relaxed. To avoid getting sidelined by golfer’s elbow, keep them relaxed throughout your swing.

2. Shoulder Injuries

golfShoulder injuries can range from minor tendonitis and bursitis to severe labral tears and other rotator cuff damage that require surgery. These types of injuries usually happen when the lead arm is kept close to the chest on the backswing. Rather than keeping your arm close to your chest, turn your upper body into the backswing to avoid injury. Upper body strength training can also protect you from shoulder injuries.

3. Neck & Back Injuries

The rotation that accompanies a golf swing frequently results in neck or lower back injuries for inexperienced golfers. Not only is there risk of straining the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in these areas, but there’s also a risk of causing serious damage to the spine with herniated or slipped discs. The best way to prevent serious injury is to get your hips, pelvis, and upper body to rotate in unison. Strengthening exercises for your neck and back are also recommended.

Of course, the best way to prevent injuries, aside from getting regular exercise off the green, is to use proper technique.
