While it’s easy for your hairstylist to create a unique do that fits your personality and personal flair, recreating it after a restful night’s sleep can feel almost impossible. Luckily, there’s a relatively simple way to preserve your hairstylist’s work for at least a few more days. If you’ve never wrapped your hair before, don’t panic—it’s easier than you think—but the techniques you’ll need to use will differ based on the style you’re trying to preserve.

For Sleek & Straight Styles

To preserve the perfectly straight blowout, start by making a center part down the back of your head. Pull both sections over your shoulders and gently brush each section. Then, move the sections to your back, careful to maintain the part. Cross the sections once, so they form an X. Then, gently fold the sections over each other, so one sits closer to the top of your head while the other is closer to the nape of your neck. Then, use curved bobby pins or alligator clips to pin the sections in place. Once secured, wrap a do-rag securely around the back of your head, and tie it snugly at the top of your forehead.

For Curls & Braids

hairstylistCurls and braids can be ruined with the slightest bit of frizz in the morning. Your best bet for secure hair wrapping is to use a bonnet, which is available at most beauty supply stores. These should be soft and breathable for your hair and comfort at night. To put the bonnet on, carefully gather your hair behind your head, and create a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Instead of using a tie, hold it with one hand, and use your free hand to slip the bonnet around the gathered hair. Release the ponytail and gently pull the bonnet up over your hairline. The elastic should fit snugly to keep the bonnet in place, but if it’s too tight, you may want to wrap your hair with a simple satin scarf.

For All Hairstyles

Some days can leave you feeling exhausted, and wrapping your hair can be more of a chore than a time-saver. To reduce frizz and preserve the blowout your hairstylist gave you a bit more easily, sleep on a satin pillowcase. While the pillowcase will not keep your hair looking the same way it did when you left the hair salon, it will help to reduce the amount of frizz you’ll see in the morning.
