Having an appliance stop working can leave you feeling stranded. Even if you can call an appliance repair specialist for same-day service, you’d probably rather not pay to have them fixed if you can take preventive measures instead. Thankfully, all it takes is a good cleaning every now and again to keep your favorite kitchen and laundry appliances running smoothly.

5 Cleaning Tips to Prevent the Need for Appliance Repair

1. Oven & Stove

If you have a self-cleaning oven, you might think that all the work will be done for you, but many owners still forget to use the feature on a regular basis. Steam-cleaning features can be particularly useful. Make sure to wipe any ash or loose food particles from the inside of the oven before beginning the self-cleaning process to prevent fire hazards.

Stoves are fairly easy to maintain, but the knobs on many models can become stuck if cleaning fluids dry onto them. To prevent this, wipe switches and knobs clean with a damp cloth rather than spraying them with a solution.

2. Refrigerator

Wiping down the coils behind the unit is the most effective way to reduce the need for refrigerator repair. The gasket that seals the doors of the fridge and freezer should also be kept clean to prevent leaks and save energy.

3. Dishwasher

To keep your dishwasher clean, you can run an empty cycle with a cleaning product instead of your regular detergent. Do this every 90 days to six months for the best results. Also, be sure to rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher; while your unit might be able to remove large food particles, they often have nowhere to go inside of your dishwasher and can get stuck in the bottom filter.

4. Microwave

If it isn’t maintained properly, your microwave is the most likely unit to need appliance repairs. Make sure to wipe the inside of your microwave clean from food splatters to prevent staining and burns. The best way to do this is to mix a cup of water with a few tablespoons of vinegar and microwave it on high for several minutes. Then, the inside should be ready to be wiped away with a sponge or paper towel.

5. Washer & Dryer

Most washers can be cleaned by adding a quart of vinegar and a cup of baking soda to the longest, hottest setting. Dryers require no more maintenance than the cleaning of the lint filter before each new load. The task can seem repetitive, but it prevents the thermal fuse from dying and causing sparks.
