Birth control gives women the freedom to choose when they want to start a family. With more types of contraceptives available than ever before, it is easy to find an option that suits you. Navigating the mass of information about birth control can be tricky, however. False claims — like “the pill will make you gain weight” — can cause confusion. Here are some common false beliefs that you can safely ignore.

5 Birth Control Myths

1. Hormonal Birth Control Hurts Fertility

There is no evidence to support the rumor that taking hormonal birth control means you can’t get pregnant in the future. Assuming that you are of child-bearing age and a healthy non-smoker, you should be able to get pregnant after quitting birth control.

2. IUD’s Are Only for Moms

women's healthWhile it is true that the cervix and uterus are slightly larger after birth, you do not have to be a mom to get an intra-uterine device. New, smaller models are perfect for those who have never had a child.

3. Birth Control Breaks Are Good for You

The rumor that giving your body a “break” from contraceptives is needed to “reestablish” hormone equilibrium and safeguard health is not true. The only exception is the shot; The FDA advises that it be taken continuously for no more than two years.

4. You Should Never Use Pills to Skip Your Period

If you have a special vacation or event like your honeymoon ahead, don’t stress about skipping the sugar pills in your packet. You may experience some break-through bleeding as a result, but it will not hurt your health.

5. Condoms Diminish Male Pleasure

Studies have shown that sex is pleasurable for men and women even with a condom. Do not let the pleasure myth deter you from using protection. While contraceptive devices like the pill, shot or IUD prevent pregnancy, they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
