If you source water from a private well, water filtration is a necessary process to ensure harmful viruses, bacteria, and additional contaminants are removed from the water before it reaches plumbing fixtures. From installing physical barriers to using chemical agents and biological methods, various water treatment procedures are used to purify residential well water. If you are looking for a water filtration method to try, whole-house reverse osmosis has proven effective at removing numerous impurities from well water. Below is a closer look at the process.

3 Key Steps Involved in Reverse Osmosis Well Water Filtration

1. Pre-Filtration

water filtrationInstalled between the well pressure tank and the point where water enters the house, a reverse osmosis water filtration system forces the water through a screen to remove soluble and insoluble materials. During the pre-filtration stage, substances such as chlorine, sulfur, and iron are removed from the water.

2. Water Pressurization

After the pre-filtration stage, water moves into a membrane chamber. From there, it is pressurized to pass through the film to filter out smaller particles. Depending on the condition of the water, two membrane options are available. If there are high levels of chlorine in the water, cellulose triacetate membranes won’t break down when exposed to the chemical. Thin film composite is not chlorine-resistant, and is therefore best used in homes with scarce traces of the substance.

3. Storage in Atmospheric Tank

After water passes through the membrane chamber, it is sent into an atmospheric storage tank. The water remains in the tank, stored at atmospheric pressure, until it is ready to be used. When water is needed, a delivery pump is used to re-pressurize the water to deliver it through the plumbing system into the house.
