A sprinkler system can save you time and money, sparing you the duty of watering your garden by hand and distributing water in a more efficient manner. Correctly installing a professional system requires some expert insight, however. Below are the basic parts of sprinkler systems that you should be familiar with.

Essential Sprinkler System Parts

1. Shutoff Valve

lawn careWhen installing a sprinkler system, you will have it connected to a main water supply on your property. If there is any kind of issue, such as a danger of flooding, you can cut off the sprinkler completely at the shutoff valve.

2. Main Lines

As mentioned above, your sprinkler system will be connected to a main water line on your property. This will be hooked up to “zone lines,” which run through various parts of your property. Hang on to a plan of how the main and zone lines connect, in case of future reconstruction.

3. Valve

A wire leads from the main line to each valve, which opens and closes the individual lines delivering water directly to the sprinkler head. Each valve controls an independent irrigation zone.

4. Backflow Stop

Your main water line is likely connected to a municipal water source. In this case, a backflow stop can be useful in case the municipal water supply is contaminated. Activate the stopper, and you can prevent this dirty water from reaching your lawn.

5. Sprinkler Head

This is the part of a sprinkler system that you are probably most familiar with. You can get various sprinkler heads to create different flows of water—from a single stream to a rainbow-like multi-stream to cover more area.
