Many homeowners keep generators on hand as a backup during electrical outages or when power is required for outdoor activities. When yours isn’t in use, proper storage is critical to ensure you keep this item in good condition and avoid electrical wiring issues. If you’re preparing to store your unit for longer than a week, here are four helpful tips approved by a certified electrician

An Electrician’s Guide to Storing a Generator

1. Inspect It

Start by performing a visual inspection of the device to see if you notice any damage, rust, or problem areas. During this process, turn the generator on to make sure it’s functioning as designed. Should you have issues turning it on, call your electrician to discuss repairs or replacement parts.

2. Clean It

ElectricianOnce you’ve performed a visual inspection and tested the generator, clean every component so it’s free of dirt, dust, and obstructions. This task can be performed using a damp cloth. Dry the generator completely with a towel.

3. Use a Fuel Stabilizer

Fuel becomes stale if it sits for over 30 days without being used. To avoid the gum and acid deposits that will lead to breakdowns, invest in a fuel treatment and stabilizer. If you need assistance finding the right product, call your electrician for recommendations.

4. Store It in Cool, Dry Place

Most importantly, once you’ve cleaned the unit and added fuel stabilizer to the system, make sure you have the perfect location to keep the generator. Ideally, electrical equipment should be left in a clean, dry area where it won’t come into contact with the elements or excessive dust and debris.
