Many homeowners enjoy the benefits of a wood-burning fireplace or stove. However, if your chimney isn’t maintained properly, a buildup of soot and tar may result in a fire that could harm your family or destroy your property. How do you know when you know it’s time for a cleaning? Consider these factors before calling a professional for a chimney inspection.

How Often Should You Get a Chimney Inspection?

No Changes & Continued Maintenance: Once a Year

There are three different inspection levels instituted by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. Level I is for is for residents who have had no changes made to their service, appliance, or conditions, and it’s considered a minimum for routine maintenance. The chimney sweep will make sure the integrity of the structure is intact, there are no blockages affecting function, and that the connections are all working properly.

System Changes/Property Sale/Incident Occurrence: Within 30 Days

It encompasses all of the criteria outlined in Level I in addition to video scanning to check the flue liners and internal workings. In addition to incidents, you must also have a Level II chimney inspection when changes were made to the system, such as fuel type, relining or input rating, or if you sell or transfer your property to someone else.

Serious Structural Damage/Potential Fire: ASAP

If it’s suspected that there is severe structural damage or there is heightened risk for a fire, a chimney sweep will need to perform a Level III inspection. This level includes the checkpoints outlined in Levels I and II, and it also delves into the concealed areas of the chimney and may require the removal of certain parts such as the crown or interior workings to fully complete an in-depth analysis.
