These days, sewing machines play an integral role in our lives. Whether you’re buying clothing at the store or mending apparel at home, this device has revolutionized the way textiles are sewn and manufactured. If you’re curious about when this crucial tool was invented, consider this brief history.

How the Sewing Machine Came to Be

When Was the First Sewing Machine Created?

Sewing MachineThe origin of the sewing machine is fiercely debated amongst historians. While there were records of patents for particular sewing machine parts as early as 1755, most credit the American farmer Elias Howe with the invention after he completed a prototype in 1844.

Was the Device an Instant Success?

It’s hard to believe in this day and age, but in 1844, Howe had difficulty finding an investor to help him manufacture and sell his device. In the meantime, large companies began creating their own versions, despite Howe’s patent. As a result, there were significant legal battles, and at one point, Howe was nearly penniless. Luckily, as popularity for the machine grew and lawsuits were settled, both Howe and the leading manufacturer of the equipment, Singer, became multi-millionaires in their lifetimes.

How Long Will My Modern Machine Last?

Modern machines include computerized components to make the process user-friendly. While it varies based on the brand and rate of usage, most machines will last several decades. Plus, a sewing machine repair company will have the equipment and experience to fix minor malfunctions.
