3 Amazing Kids who used Math and Science to Change the World

At Mathnasium of Avon, we know that success requires perseverance, resourcefulness, and confidence. Strong math skills help too. These three stories are about kids who showed exactly the skills and habits we work on at our center. We hope you find the stories of the following three kids as inspiring as we do.

  1. Gitanjali Rao is an eleven-year-old seventh grader in Lone Tree, Colorado. She won $25,000 from the National Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She invented a device to test water for contaminants, such as lead. It is better than the water testing products currently available to consumers because her device is easy to use and reliable. Gitanjali became interested in water after learning about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. You can listen to an interview with this amazing young lady here. http://www.cpr.org/news/story/lone-tree-7th-grader-is-americas-top-young-scientist?utm_content=buffer5df92&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer
  2. Thirteen-year-old Tanmay Bakshi lives and works in Canada. Tanmay is the youngest IBM Watson programmer. “Watson” is an artificial intelligence computer system. He developed and released his first app at just nine-years-old, and then wrote a book about it! He also creates tutorials on math and does public speaking engagements.  You can watch Tanmay speak here in this interview after he was hired by Google for 1.25 million. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoNNjwkLTP4 You can also check out his tutorials on his Youtube channel “Tanmay Teaches.”
  3. Kelvin Doe is from Freetown, the capitol city in Sierra Leone, Africa. At eleven he used scrap electronics that other people threw away to create a transmitter for a radio station. He used the transmitter to create a radio station to broadcast news and music to people in Freetown. He still loves inventing and MIT invited him to be part of their “Visiting Practioner’s Program.” Kevin continues to use his creativity and engineering skills to better the lives of people in his community. We honor these amazing kids for using grit, a growth mindset, and math to change the world for the better.  We encourage our students at Mathnasium to develop these habits and attitudes. While these three stories are exceptional, we know that every child has the ability to change the world. They just need access to the learning the skills, opportunity to create, and someone to believe in them. What could your child do with the right skills?
