If you’re planning a big move, packing and transporting all of your belongings to your new place can be quite the project. It can be an even lengthier process if you’re moving a lot of unnecessary items. Before you begin packing, it helps to go through your home and get rid of belongings you don’t actually need. Here are a few items you can safely throw out or donate so you don’t have to account for them when packing and moving.

What Types of Items Should You Get Rid of Before Moving?

1. Outdated Electronics

Electronic devices like old phones, TVs, and gaming systems tend to take up a lot of space, and in all likelihood, you’ll never use many of them again. if you have any electronics you haven’t used in at least a year, donate them to a local secondhand shop or see if your recycling service has a process for accepting electronic items.

2. Books & Magazines

People also tend to collect lots of books and magazines over the years, but they rarely go back to reread or reference a big part of that collection. This doesn’t mean you have to throw out all of your books. But you should give your shelves a once-over to weed out anything you won’t ever pick up again, especially since reading materials tend to be especially heavy when packed together.

3. Out-of-Style Clothing

movingIt’s also a good idea to go through your closet and get rid of any clothing, shoes, jackets, and other accessories you haven’t worn in at least a year. Most people have more clothes than they’re able to wear regularly. If you just pack up your entire dresser and closet, you’ll likely end up with more bags than necessary when it comes time to move.

4. Excess Childhood Memorabilia

The most special memories from your childhood or your kids’ memory boxes should be preserved. However, most people tend to gather more than their fair share of memorabilia throughout their lives. Take a quick look through those boxes and documents to see if you can throw anything out and condense your collection a bit.

5. Expired Food Items

While it may be beneficial to pack spices and non-perishable items from your pantry so you have a starting point in your new home, you need to make sure everything is still good. Check expiration dates and throw out anything that’s past its prime so you only have to pack and move the essentials.
