When your little one has a toothache, it can interfere with their ability to do everything from eat to sleep, significantly disrupting their daily routine. Although visiting with your child’s dentist is a must, sometimes toothaches need to be treated at home while you wait for an appointment. Here are three easy ways to address these.

At-Home Toothache Care Before Going to the Dentist

1. Apply an Ice Pack

If you have ice in your freezer, you have an easy way to treat that toothache. Ice constricts the blood vessels around the tooth, reducing swelling that could be contributing to pain. When you apply it to your little one’s jaw, cover the pack with a soft cloth and leave it on for15 minutes at a time to keep the area from becoming too cold.

2. Have Them Swish With Salt Water

dentistAlthough it might be difficult to convince your little one to swish with salt water, doing so could help them rinse away stuck food particles and prevent infection, since salt solutions kill bacteria. Add one teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water and have older kids swish for a few minutes to alleviate discomfort.

3. Try Benzocaine

If ice packs and salt solution rinses don’t work, you can always try to apply a small amount of benzocaine to the affected tooth. This over-the-counter topical medication helps to slow nerve impulses, temporarily relieving pain caused by dental decay, canker sores, and teething.

Remember, even mild toothaches should be inspected carefully by your child’s dentist to check for underlying infection. Dr. Dean T.
