Car window tinting protects you, your passengers, and your vehicle’s interior from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. It can also help reduce glare while you’re driving, enhance your privacy and security, and keep your cabin cool. If you’re planning to have tints installed, you should familiarize yourself with the do’s and don’ts of caring for it.

Do:

Let It Set

After installation, wait at least 72 hours before rolling down your windows and at least a week before using the rear window defroster. This will give the tint enough time to set. While you’re at it, refrain from cleaning the windows or even touching them for a couple of days.

Use a Soft Cloth to Clean It

car window tintingCar tint is applied to the inside of windows so it’s not exposed to elements that will stick to it and harden—such as mud, tree sap, or bird droppings. Therefore, a squeegee or non-abrasive cloths made of microfiber and chamois should be enough to clean tinted windows.

Don’t:

Use Harsh Cleaners

Car window tinting is sensitive to harsh chemical cleaners and anything with ammonia. These solutions can discolor your tint or damage it. Water—or a combination of soap and water if there is oily residue—works best when cleaning the inside of your windows. If you’re having your car washed, make sure the shop follows this rule as well.

Try to Fix Bubbles On Your Own

Bubbles left after installation often go away on their own after some time. If they are still there after a couple of weeks, don’t try to get rid of them by yourself. Most tint shops offer warranties against bubbling, discoloration, delamination, and other defects. Just bring it back immediately, as the duration of the warranty may vary.
