It can be alarming if your water bill suddenly skyrockets for seemingly no apparent reason. Often, this is the result of a leak somewhere in your plumbing. Isolating and fixing the issue can help return things to normal. Steve’s Plumbing & Heating is the areas leading plumber, and they have a few suggestions for getting to the bottom of the problem.

How to Check for Leaks in Your Plumbing

Preparation Work

PlumberStart this process by turning on all of the faucets in your home. Next, turn off all of the appliances requiring water, such as the washing machine, ice maker, and water purifier. Head outside to locate your water meter, and once you’ve found it, open the lid, and remove the plastic flap from the glass dial. Look for a red triangle located near the lower left-hand side of the meter; this is referred to as the flow indicator. The flow indicator moves as water passes through the meter, which you should observe for a few moments to see if it moves. If you notice movement, there is most likely a leak somewhere.

Finding the Leak

With the faucets and all water-based appliances still off, start this process by checking the toilets. Turn off the water valve connected to the tank, return to the meter, and note if there is movement at the flow indicator. If there isn’t any movement, the toilet is the source of the leak. Next, check your irrigation system by shutting off the anti-siphon valve. Again, return to the meter, and note movement at the flow indicator. Continue this process for the washing machine, ice machine, water purifier, and other appliances that rely on water.

A few simple steps can help you identify the source of the leak, so you can correct the issue and get things back in order.
