Your first scuba diving excursion will be both thrilling and liberating. Once you’ve received the proper scuba certifications, it’s time for your first shore dive, and it’s in your best interest to educate yourself as to what you can expect. Most new divers find that their first trip is different than they initially expected, but with the proper insight, you can guarantee that you get the most out of each trip. If you’re brand-new to scuba diving, be sure to communicate any questions you may have to your instructor before you head out so they can ease any remaining concerns.

3 Things You’ll Experience During Your First Scuba Dive

1. Underwater Noise

Many new divers assume that plunging deep below the water’s surface will eliminate all sound. They are often surprised to find that their breathing equipment actually creates quite a bit of noise while it indicates that everything is working correctly. You may hear a bubbling sound each time you exhale or a loud swishing as you breathe in. Because sound travels more quickly in water, you’re likely to hear reverberations for the majority of the dive. This is completely normal and should serve as a sign of encouragement that your equipment is keeping you safe.

2. Partially Restricted Vision

scuba divingScuba diving goggles are designed to fit all the way around your face to keep any amount of water from seeping in and affecting your eye sight. However, because the goggles are so bulky, they can restrict some of your peripheral vision. Luckily, side vision is only semi-important while you are underwater, as you are mainly instructed to focus on what’s directly in front of you. You’re likely to experience a few blind spots, but don’t let this frighten you—it’s entirely expected and your instructor will always be nearby to ensure you are comfortable and safe.

3. Weightlessness

Being suspended underwater means the feeling of complete weightlessness. Floating lightly is an incredible feeling that most scuba divers come to know and cherish, but new divers might feel the urge to resist this sensation and attempt to stay planted firmly in one place. Rather than fighting the motion of the water, move with it and allow it to whirl you around gently. The instructor will keep an eye on you and will never guide you toward a place where the tide could be a problem, so enjoy the feeling while it lasts!
