Deciding to upgrade your current ride can be exciting. When weighing options, don’t neglect to add used cars to the wishlist. Many offer the same state-of-the-art features, high-performance capabilities, and effortless handling of newer models, but their previously owned status makes the price points more affordable. So you don’t leave the lot with a lemon, below is a quick breakdown of a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when buying a used car.

Do:

Perform background checks on cars that pique your interest.

Do your due diligence and find out everything about the used car before committing to buying it. The car dealer or private seller should be able to provide a Vehicle History Report. If not, look up the information on the Department of Motor Vehicles’ website using the VIN. The report should list any accidents the vehicle has been in, as well as the types of repairs and maintenance checks performed, and additional information that will aid your decision to purchase.

Set a budget & stick to it.

When on the hunt for a new car, it is easy to be tempted by something out of your price range. To avoid going over budget, decide the maximum you are willing to spend and stick to it. Tell the car dealer when visiting the lot. This way, they can focus the search on cars in your budget.

Don’t:

Be afraid to ramp up the engine on a test drive.

used carsTaking a used car out for a test drive is typically the only way you can see how it handles before buying it. When on the road, don’t be afraid to ramp up the engine. Seeing how the car handles the surge in power will be a pretty good indicator of whether it can meet the needs of your driving demands.

Forget to check the brake fluid.

When you pop the hood to look at the car’s mechanical components, make sure to check the brake fluid, as it will save you a lot of repair costs later. When you check the reservoirs, the brake fluid should have a clear or yellow appearance. If the fluid is dark, you might want to request an inspection by a mechanic. Though brake fluid darkens as it’s used, it could also indicate failing rubber lines or corroded parts.
