The piano is an incredibly unique instrument that’s difficult to move. When taking private piano lessons, you won’t bring your own device to your instructor. Instead, you’ll utilize theirs, since it isn’t a mobile piece of equipment, like a guitar or brass instrument. As such, it’s natural to question the height of the keyboard and how this plays into the learning process.

Understanding Piano Keys & Height Measurements

What Is the Standard Height for Student learning how to play pianoPiano Keyboards?

Generally speaking, the majority of upright pianos keyboards are approximately 28 inches from the ground. That being said, the height of the keyboards can vary depending on whether you’re taking piano lessons on an upright or grand model. In addition to the style of the instrument, heights can vary based on region. Pianos in Asia, for example, are often taller than those manufactured in the United States. As a general rule of thumb, height differentiation between players is resolved by owning an artist’s bench that can be easily adjusted to fit you.

Does the Height of the Keyboard Play a Significant Role When Starting Piano Lessons?

When it comes to mastering piano, keyboard height is one of the basics. You’ll work with the instructor to find the perfect bench level to comfortably play the instrument both at your piano school and at home. Before signing for piano lessons ask your potential piano teacher if he/she uses an adjustable piano bench at the studio. If not, you might want to look for a different teacher who is aware of the importance of the proper posture. For the young children, the foot bench must be used as well as an adjustable bench to keep feet standing solidly on the floor.  Determining a comfortable position and posture is a foundation for developing a proper piano technique.
