Ask any dentist—flossing is essential to your oral health. If you know how important it is to clean your teeth but have trouble with the technique, it may help to learn a few professional tricks. Ronald W. Ristow DDS in Oconto Falls, WI, is sharing his best pointers for a superior flossing experience. Explore his tried and true tips for excellent home dental care.

Dentist’s Top Flossing Tips

1. Find Quality Floss

There are many different types of floss. The nylon or multifilament kind is most affordable and comes waxed or unwaxed. You can also find it in a variety of flavors. Be careful when sliding the threads between your teeth as it can shred during use. Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) or monofilament floss is durable and shred resistant. However, it is more expensive than traditional nylon floss. PTFE floss comes unwaxed, but dentists say this does not affect the quality of your experience.

2. Use Enough Material

dentistSome patients do not use enough thread to floss their teeth. If you are having trouble with flossing, try using more material. Dedicate about 18 inches of waxed or unwaxed threading each session for more control. Most will wind around your fingers, and the remaining few inches will go between your teeth.

3. Hold Floss Correctly

When you are ready to begin, place the strand of floss between your thumbs and index fingers. Pull the floss tightly so it is easier to manage. Next, work the thread up and down gently between your teeth. Curve the material around the base of your tooth, ensuring you reach beneath the gumline. Take care not to force the floss, which could injure your gums.

4. Reach Each Tooth

Some patients do not spend enough time flossing. However, superior results take time. While it may be difficult to reach your back molars, make sure you clean each tooth every time you floss. Any teeth left out of your routine may develop cavities, inflammation, or gum disease.

5. Practice Every Day

It is important to floss your teeth every night. Create a routine before you go to bed, which includes brushing, flossing, and using antibacterial mouthwash. If you maintain this practice each evening, you will enjoy a healthy mouth.

While it is essential to take good care of your smile at home, a friendly team of dental professionals can provide biannual teeth cleanings and ensure your mouth is in the best shape possible. To make an appointment with a caring and highly skilled dentist, call Ronald W.
