While using awareness to maintain roadway safety is an important tactic learned in driving school, being aware on the road can also help you develop courteous driving habits. Although not required by law, taking steps such as letting another driver merge in front of you in a line of traffic can lead to a better roadway experience for yourself and others. Being a courteous driver demands situational awareness, which is what NY’s Morgan School of Driving teaches all of their students.

Here are just a few ways in which the situational awareness taught in driving school can help you become more courteous on the road:

  • Understanding Limited Sight: When you’re on the road, it’s natural to only see things from your own perspective. But sometimes being a courteous driver requires you to see things from other points of view. For instance, if someone pulls out in front of you around a sharp corner, it’s possible they didn’t see you due to limited visibility. Likewise, always be mindful of where you’re driving in relation to another person’s blind spot to avoid serious accidents.
  • driving schoolAdapting to Weather Conditions: As a New York driver, you may find yourself on the road during unfavorable weather conditions. When the roads could be slick from rain, sleet, or snow, always give yourself and others around you extra time to stop. You should also take into consideration how sun glare, overcast conditions, and pelting rain could inhibit visibility. Any time driving conditions are less than favorable, be extra vigilant about your surroundings.
  • Being Mindful of Other Drivers: Even if you aim to be a responsible and polite driver, you’ll still encounter bad driving habits on the road. For instance, if someone is lost and driving below the speed limit, it’s a good idea to simply maintain an appropriate following distance until you can pass safely. The driver could make a sudden turn or stop short, so being courteous and avoiding tailgating will also keep you and your vehicle safe.

Morgan School of Driving has enrolled more than 400,000 students and has taught driving lessons since 1943. Their driving school has three convenient locations in Rochester, Greece, and Fairport, NY. For enrollment, call (585) 288-6290 or visit the school online.
