CNC machines are indispensable for prototyping and used advanced modeling technology to operationalize drilling and welding machinery. These tools can be used to create virtually any pattern or shape in materials such as wood, plastic, foam, and aluminum. To avoid injury and create a usable product, it’s essential to understand how to operate CNC machines safely and correctly.

4 Tips for CNC Machine Safety

1. Wear the Right Gear

Proper safety equipment is essential for preventing workplace injuries. Safety goggles and earplugs should be worn at all times. Look for a sturdy pair of safety boots or other closed-toe footwear with a steel toe. Take off any jewelry, secure loose clothing, and make sure long hair is pulled away from the face.

People and objects should be kept at least six inches away while the CNC machine is in operation. Make sure the surrounding ground is free of obstructions, so you can reach the machine quickly if needed.

3. Keep Up With Maintenance

A faulty machine is more likely to malfunction, resulting in avoidable injuries. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule, and take the time for a few minor checks at the end of each day. At the minimum, check lube and hydraulic fluid levels daily, grease any moving parts, and wipe down all surfaces with a rag.

4. Complete Proper Training

Any worker operating a CNC machine should understand the technical process of controlling all moving parts and tools. Make sure you and your team know how to inspect, maintain, and use the machine and its software.
