Boilers are a crucial component of your home. As a necessary source of heat and hot water, well-maintained systems with top energy efficiency will do their job for up to 15 years without inflating your utility bills. Eventually, this unit may show signs of needing replacement. Here is how to tell if it is time for a new one.

Signs of Age

When your boiler has exceeded 15 years, it has most likely reached the end of its lifespan. Even if it still works, older technology will not be as energy efficient as newer models. You may also notice that it is taking much longer than usual to heat the home or warm up the water supply. When it does start to rise in temperatures, it may not be reaching the level it used to, making your home feel chilly and the water lukewarm.

boilersIf costs begin to skyrocket on your utility bills, your heating system is using more energy than it should to do its job. In addition, frequent repairs to an older system will begin to outweigh its worth, indicating it’s time to upgrade.

Physical Signs

Boilers that are on the way out can also pose a safety hazard. At the first sign of trouble, call your heating system professional to assess the situation. Issues to watch for include yellow flames instead of blue, which means carbon monoxide is present. This colorless, odorless gas can lead to CO poisoning and possibly death.

Also, listen for odd noises that alert you something internally isn’t working correctly such as the pump or fan. Odors also spell trouble, and even the faintest should be investigated. If you see dark marks around the casing of your boiler, call for help immediately to protect your family and property.
