Getting a new puppy is an exciting and joyous experience for a family. However, with any growing bundle of joy comes the not-so-fun stage of teething. Puppies, like humans, go through the painful process of their baby teeth falling out as their adult teeth grow in. This causes their gums to become sore and irritated, which in turn, wreaks havoc on anything they can get their mouths on. Luckily, there are three ways to manage this stage with proper pet care and without your favorite pair of shoes being sacrificed in the process.

How to Manage Teething Puppies

1. Provide an Array of Chew Toys

Pet care for a teething puppy starts by giving them what they desperately need: things to chew on. Get them a range of chew toys made of hard rubber, especially ones you can fill with water and freeze. The cooling sensation eases the puppy’s sore gums. Especially as the puppy grows, hormonal changes can increase their biting habits, so it’s imperative to provide as many toys as possible to keep them satisfied and occupied.

2. Teach Them Boundaries

Puppies take cues from tones, so if you give a big yelp every time they bite you – no matter how small – they’ll eventually learn to back off. Reinforce this behavior by giving them a treat or another form of positive reinforcement.

3. Keep Things Out of Reach

Another aspect of pet care to consider is making sure you’re not creating an environment for your growing puppy to fall back into nipping temptations. Clear your floors and put away any valuable items so that your puppy isn’t suddenly overtaken by the desire to chew on a scarf you accidentally dropped on the floor. Remember to give them other options and reinforce their good behavior early on so they don’t continue developing bad habits.
