While “home improvement” and “insurance” aren’t often used in the same sentence, the right coverage can make a significant difference when you need fire and water damage restoration, mold removal, or a similar service. Not every policy covers every problem, and when you’re worried about the state of your home, coverage is key. Here are the basic types of home insurance and how they can help when an emergency arises.

Types of Coverage That Will Protect Your Home Improvements

Basic

A basic insurance policy covers just that: the basics. In this case, you will receive protection amongst common threats, such as explosions, lightning, fire, hail, windstorms, volcanoes, riots, and damage from a vehicle or aircraft. Keep in mind that a basic policy only covers the property—your belongings are a separate endeavor.

If you want your possessions protected, specify that on a separate form when filling out and signing the policy. Earthquakes, mold, and flooding won’t be covered under this basic choice, and neither is liability if someone gets injured. If you live in a major storm zone, an upgraded policy is recommended.

Broad

home improvementIn addition to everything mentioned above, this common policy is more comprehensive, covering damage from falling objects, ice, sleet, and snow, frozen HVAC systems, cracked pipes, overflow from a local water source, and damage from electric currents. Keep in mind that major issues, such as fire and water damage restoration, aren’t covered here, but this policy does add the structure, personal property, and liability into the deal. If you’re worried about any damage in particular, let the company know—any events that aren’t mentioned and signed for will not be covered.

Comprehensive

As the most comprehensive policy on the market, this type of insurance covers nearly any danger you can imagine, along with belongings and personal liability. Unless something is specifically excluded, it’s covered, which makes this the ideal choice for families in disaster-prone zones.

These events are usually excluded, but if they happen unexpectedly, the policy will take control: landslides, mudslides, floods, pest infestations, foundational issues, mold, smog, war, and nuclear hazards. Since issues such as floods and mudslides are usually a sudden surprise for most homeowners, they’ll probably be covered—speak with a professional to learn the details of your unique policy, and how home improvement and remodeling contractors can help.
