Most Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, but American Latinos of Dominican heritage get to observe another big holiday a few months earlier. On February 27, 1844, the Dominican Republic split from Haiti and finally became its own nation, making Dominican Independence Day February 27. The holiday is honored throughout the entire month with celebrations across the Americas.

In New York City, Riverside Car & Limo is the go-to choice for reliable cab and limousine service, and they are proud of their employees of Dominican heritage. Below, the New York car service offers a bit of history on this important holiday and the rich cultural significance of its festivities.

The Origins & Celebrations of Dominican Heritage Month

The Dominican War of Independence

After the Criollo class on the island of Hispaniola overthrew the Spanish government in 1821, they unified with Haiti. At the time, the population of Haiti was nearly ten times that of the former colony, and the country had more military strength and economic power. When the Haitian government failed to provide for its people, though, a young leader named Juan Pablo Duarte founded a secret society in his home to fight for the Dominican Republic’s independence. Notable leaders in this movement also included Francesco Del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella.

Calling themselves La Trinitaria, these like-minded young people led the country to freedom and fought the Haitian occupation over the next two decades. On February 24, 1844, La Trinitaria left their secret meetings to challenge the Haitians openly. Within three days, they had managed to gain autonomy from Haiti.
