Heat pumps are a critical component in HVAC and refrigeration equipment. They move heat from one place to another to maintain desired temperatures. While a professional HVAC technician should service your heat pump annually, there are a few things you can do between appointments to keep your system in top shape. Read on for maintenance tips that will help preserve your heat pump.

Heat Pump Maintenance Checklist

Proper Temperatures

To ensure your heat pump isn’t overworked and putting unnecessary stress on components, keep your thermostat above 65 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. In summer, try not to go below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Clean & Clear

Trees & Shrubs

Make sure your greenery, especially trees and shrubs, are planted at least 18 inches away from the heat pump. Always ensure that leaves and dirt are removed from coils, and tidy up around the perimeter of your heat pump to stop debris and foliage from crowding it.

Gutters & Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts should not be draining on or around heat pumps. In colder weather, runoff moisture will freeze, causing an icy buildup that will interfere with your HVAC system’s functionality. Direct excessive water away and make sure there is proper drainage around your property so water won’t pool.

Safety

Never clean your heat pump with sharp or heavy objects, even when you are trying to chip off ice. It is better to turn off the unit and melt the ice and snow with warm water. Sharp objects will not only damage your unit, but they can also injure you in the process.
