If you are one of the many Americans who suffers from frequent headaches, you know just how debilitating they can be. When you feel that throbbing pain in your head, all you want to do is crawl into bed, take some Advil, and hope that the aching goes away soon. However, you don’t want to rely on pain medication all the time. Seeing a chiropractor is considered an effective way to treat headaches, and it doesn’t come with any side effects.

How Chiropractic Care Can Alleviate Headaches

chiropractorMany of us spend a big portion of our day sitting in front of a computer screen. Staying in the same position for hours at a time can cause muscle tension in the neck and upper back, which may irritate the nerves that control blood flow to the head. A chiropractor can relieve a lot of this tension by performing a chiropractic adjustment. During this treatment, chiropractors use their hands or a small instrument to apply sudden force to the spine, which reduces stress on the system.

Preventing Headaches in the Future

If you are willing to make some lifestyle changes, you can reduce the number of headaches you experience in the future. Here are a few ways to fight off head pain:

  • Practice Good Posture: Slouching can put unnecessary stress on your neck, so it’s important to sit up straight with your shoulders pulled back. Consider putting a small pillow under your lower back for extra support.
  • Do Simple Stretches: If you spend a large part of your day in a fixed position, take a break every 30 minutes to do some stretches. For example, turn your head to the left for a few seconds and then turn it to the right. Repeat 10 times.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink at least eight glasses of water a day, as dehydration can cause headaches.
