When your home’s plumbing is powered by a water well, ongoing maintenance and care are imperative to ensure you always have access to clean water. During an annual inspection, your pumping contractor will perform the following steps as part of comprehensive residential well services

4 Cleaning Steps Needed for Residential Well Service

1. Evaluation

Well ServiceThe first step in cleaning a water well is a thorough evaluation of the product you’re receiving. Your pumping contractor will inspect the color of the water and whether there is any debris floating in it. Next, they’ll smell the fluid to ensure it remains odorless. Faucets will also be run to confirm damage within the well isn’t impacting water flow and pressure.

2. Water Tests

After a visual inspection, the pumping contractor will test the water to confirm pH levels and whether any unwanted chemicals or bacteria have made their way into your supply. Should results show active bacteria or coliform, a thorough cleaning of the system will commence.

3. Add Chlorine

Chlorine or beach is poured into the well to kill any harmful bacteria. The amount of chlorine needed will vary depending on the size of the well. Most residential water wells need about a gallon. Once added, proper circulation is key, so your contractor will add more water to the well from a garden hose until levels rise above the aquifer and each component is sanitized. This should be done at least twice a year, based on the recommendations of your well service provider to guarantee cleanliness.

4. Rest Period

Once these chemicals are added, refrain from using the well for at least eight hours. Then, you’ll flush the chlorine water out until you stop smelling bleach.
