Home health care can make a big difference in a client’s well-being. While general nursing provides the basic tenets for effective care, our team at J&D Ultracare in Suffern, NY, believes that you can always strive to do more as an in-home nurse. By adding the following tips to your practice, you’ll build a deeper connection with your client and improve their quality of life.

How to Improve Care as an In-Home Nurse

1. Be Personable

in-home nurseIn some cases, the client-nurse relationship can seem distant and strictly medical. This is someone you may see every day as an in-home nurse, and companionship is extremely important to them. Take time to sit down and get to know them. Ask about their lives, their past, and share some insight into your own outside of your work as an in-home nurse. Establishing a friendship can do wonders for their mental health and will also make the job more enjoyable and rewarding for you.

2. Be Flexible & Punctual

Some patients may appreciate and even require a strict routine, so make sure you always arrive on time. Likewise, be flexible about their needs. You may have to stay longer than usual or show up earlier on specific days. Working to meet your client’s needs shows that you respect them and that you’re committed to their care.

3. Don’t Bring Baggage to Work

Whether it’s turning off your phone or setting aside some emotional difficulties, it’s important to leave outside issues at the door. Any distance or negative emotions will affect your client, so take every step to show up happy and ready to focus on them. Your mood impacts theirs, and you may also find that by setting your problems aside, you achieve a moment of relief from anything that’s bothering you.
