A vehicle breakdown is bad enough by itself, but breaking down at night is even worse, presenting a whole new level of danger. First of all, visibility is severely limited, both for you and other drivers. It’s also not a safe time, in general, to be spending time outdoors. When you’re waiting for your towing service to arrive, it’s important to be patient and take steps to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

How to Stay Safe While Waiting for a Towing Service at Night

1. Illuminate Your Situation Immediately

Before you even pull over, turn on your hazards at the first sign that your vehicle is breaking down. Flashing your brake lights alone simply isn’t effective enough at warning other drivers that you’re about to drastically slow down. To prevent collisions, activate your hazards right away and then start pulling over. Then leave them on until your towing service arrives. If you feel safe doing so, exit from the passenger side and set up flares or reflectors about four paces on either side of your vehicle.

2. Pinpoint Your Position

towingTo help your towing service find you as quickly as possible, look up your exact location with a smartphone. Save the location, if possible, and be prepared to text it to your towing company if they ask. If you’ve never “dropped a pin” for someone before, try doing it once when it isn’t an emergency. Knowing how to do so is valuable at night, when it’s harder to visually locate landmarks.

3. Exit From the Passenger Side

Stay inside the vehicle as much as possible while waiting for your towing service. But if you need to exit for any reason, always exit from the passenger side. Even if you don’t see anyone coming, you never know if a vehicle could speed by unexpectedly; there could also be cars on the road without working headlights. In any case, keep your vehicle between the road and your person until your tow truck arrives.
