If you are looking for a way to enhance your smile, you’re not alone. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, nearly half of all U.S adults believe their smile could use some improvement. Whether you’re dealing with stains, gaps, or crooked teeth, dental veneers and crowns will help you achieve the results you’ve been searching for. But which option is right for you? Below, Waipahu, HI, family dentist Lisa Valderueda, D.M.D., discusses the differences.

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between dental veneers and crowns is the thickness. Whereas the former are typically 1mm thick or less, crowns are often 2mm thick or more. As such, more enamel must be removed during a crown application than with dental veneers.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a thin shell of porcelain placed over the front of a tooth. They are often used to make minor alterations in its shape or color and are stain-resistant and easily maintained through proper oral hygiene practices. However, when compared to crowns, veneers are less durable, raising the risk of future fractures and cracks.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Unlike dental veneers, a dental crown covers the tooth completely, offering added protection from fractures due to grinding, clenching, and chewing. The added coverage allows for improvements to the structure of the tooth as well as cosmetic changes.

Which Option Is Right for You?

However, depending on your individual needs, one may be better than the other. Whereas veneers are often used to address cosmetic concerns, such as stains, chips, and cracks, crowns are typically recommended to correct serious damage, such as a major fracture or broken tooth.
