The temperature of your home is one of the largest factors in your comfort, but it isn’t the only one. Your humidity also plays a role in how it feels to step inside. Thankfully, with your HVAC system and a few other tricks, you can closely control your home’s humidity and keep it within the perfect range.

How to Control Humidity

1. Run Your HVAC System

HVACIf your area tends to be muggy, there’s an easy fix: your heating and cooling equipment. Both air conditioners and furnaces pull moisture from the air, so as long as this equipment is correctly maintained, you’ll see an automatic dehumidifying effect whenever it runs.

2. Get a Dehumidifier

If the natural moisture-fighting tendencies of your HVAC equipment aren’t enough, you can also buy a portable dehumidifier for the part of the house where you spend the most time. This allows you closer control of your conditions.

3. Get a Humidifier

If you have the opposite problem and are suffering from dry air in your home, a humidifier is the perfect solution. This piece of equipment evaporates water to relieve the dryness of the air and let you breathe easier.

4. Use Exhaust Fans

Some activities, like cooking or showering, naturally humidify your home. You can limit this effect by using your home’s exhaust fans to vent the steam you’re creating. Flick the fan on before you start your activity, and run it until the air returns to normal.

5. Change Your Routine

You can also take steps on your own to limit the humidity generated by your daily activities. When you cook, use dishes with lids to limit the amount of steam, which escapes into the air. Take shorter showers, and try showering at a cooler temperature to reduce the steam from your bathroom.
