Gymnastics is not just a sport, but a lifestyle. You dedicate a significant amount of time to the craft, and while your non-gymnast friends may not get it, it’s totally worth it. From killer slip-ups to the feeling of nailing a routine, there are certain things only gymnasts can understand.

4 Notions Gymnasts Can Identify With

1. Chalk & Gauze Are Essential

There are some things people keep on them at all times like their phone, keys, and wallet. You, on the other hand, wouldn’t be caught without a roll of gauze. You never know when you’ll need to wrap your wrists and ankles. And all that chalk you use? At some point, it’s going to start feeling like an extra layer of skin.

2. You’re Tougher Than You Look

It takes a lot of discipline, perseverance, boldness, and of course strength to be a gymnast. You learn this early on and develop those skills the more you practice. Eventually, through the sweat and the impressive muscle mass gained, you realize your body is a lot stronger than anyone might think. Gymnasts may tend to be small, but they more than make up for it in toughness.

3. Sitting in Odd Positions Is Pretty Comfy

gymnastsYou’re sitting on the ground reading a book or browsing your phone, and somebody asks, “Isn’t that uncomfortable?” You have no idea what they mean until you realize that to non-gymnasts, your position may seem a little unnatural. For someone who’s constantly stretching their body to the limits, doing the splits on your downtime is as standard as sitting cross-legged. Let onlookers be shocked—this is relaxation at its finest.

4. The World Is Your Gym

Eventually, the moves you practice are going to become second nature to you, maybe so much so that you find yourself tumbling outside the gym. Sometimes you have to fight the urge not to break into aerials or a front walkover. You’re not trying to show off, but you can’t help but feel a little bit of pride every time someone asks you to show them your roundoff-back handspring.
