What to Expect From a Veteran Funeral Service

Eligibility

Veteran-Funeral-ServiceCertain conditions must be met for a person to be eligible for military honors at their funeral. First, they must either currently serve in an active duty or selected reserve capacity, or they must have served in that capacity during their lifetime. It’s also important that they did not depart from the military dishonorably. Former military personnel who were discharged because of a disability or injury incurred in the line of duty are eligible. The individual must also have completed at least one full term of service, assuming they were not discharged because of an injury.

Planning

If you wish to hold a veteran funeral service, let the funeral director know. They’ll contact the appropriate military service to make the necessary arrangements.

This is an opportunity to discuss what military elements you would like incorporated into the funeral. Not all military funerals are the same, but they often include drumming, volley shots, and flags draped over the coffin. Use this early stage to try and arrange for the elements that are most important to you and your family.
