Having a baby can be an exciting and fulfilling journey, but it may be one you are not yet ready for. As some women pursue their careers and education, they may want to wait to start a family or prevent additional pregnancies after having one or two children. To ensure each pregnancy is healthy and planned, it is important to choose a birth control method that suits your needs. Fortunately, now more than ever, there are a wide variety of family planning and contraceptive options on the market.

5 Effective Methods of Birth Control

1. Condoms

Condoms are one of the most easily accessible methods for preventing pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms exist for both men and women and are ideal if you are not in a long-term relationship or have multiple partners. When used properly, condoms are 97% effective. They are also available over the counter without a prescription.

2. Contraceptive Pills

Oral contraceptives are another popular form of birth control. Available with a prescription, this method is up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used as directed. Taken daily, this method does not protect against the spread of STDs, but it can minimize the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

3. IUD

The IUD, or intrauterine device, is one of the most effective methods for long-term pregnancy prevention. The device is implanted into your cervix by a gynecologist or obstetrician and can prevent pregnancy for up to 12 years. IUDs are available with or without hormones and are best suited for women in long-term relationships who have previously had children.

4. Vaginal Ring

A vaginal ring is a form of monthly birth control. At the start of the menstrual cycle, a flexible ring is inserted vaginally and placed at the base of the cervix. Over the next four weeks, the ring releases a low dose of contraceptive hormones to prevent pregnancy. The ring is available with a prescription and is preferred by many women for its comfort and convenience.

5. Contraceptive Implant

Like an IUD, a contraceptive implant offers long-term pregnancy prevention. Placed in the arm by your gynecologist or primary care physician, this implant releases a low dose of hormones over the course of four years. This birth control method is ideal for women who do not want a child in the near future but believe an IUD to be too long of a commitment.
