The movie theater hasn’t always been what it is today. In fact, the first movies ever played didn’t have either color or sound. It has taken over a hundred years for the cinema to evolve from that into what it is today—check out the following timeline of the evolution of movies.

1890s: The First Motion Picture Cameras Were Invented

While the first motion picture cameras were hardly as advanced as today’s technology, it was during this time that people began creating short films of just a few minutes. Film studios began to pop up, and special effects began to develop within the first 10 years.

1900-1927: The Silent Era

The first films ever created were considered to be part of the Silent Era, as they were not only made in black and white but were also silent films. As the audience, you were expected to pick up on the emotion based on the acting or there would be subtitles added.

1927: The First Talkie Was Created

In 1927, the first film with sound called The Jazz Singer was released and completely changed the movie industry. Every film released from then on had to adapt to the new technology that allowed for sound to be included in their films, and this proved to be too difficult for many actors. Some of them did not survive the transition, as their acting was too theatrical or their voices simply didn’t come off well on screen.

1950’s: The Golden Age of Asian Cinema

cinemaThe House Un-American Activities Committee was responsible for investigating people and organizations who were suspected of having ties to communism, which resulted in many directors, writers, and actors being blacklisted and unable to work. This left the film industry, which was being predominantly run by Americans, open for other countries to take the lead. It was during the 1950s that many non-English speaking countries released films, especially Asian countries.

1980’s: The VCR

While film studios were originally against people owning VCRs that allowed them to watch movies at home because they thought they’d stop going to movie theaters, it eventually became a second revenue for filmmakers. People would buy VHS tapes so that they could own their favorite movies to watch at home over and over.

Today: The Technology Era

These days, movie theaters offer luxury options that you simply can’t get at home. Movies are played in 3D while surround sound speakers make it seem like what’s occurring on the screen is happening right next to the moviegoer. Cinemas are offering luxury seating with individual reclining seats, and full meal services so everyone feels right at home.

Clark Cinema 10 - A Luxury Seating Theatre in Andalusia, Alabama offers luxury seating experiences for all their guests. They offer viewing of all of the newly released major motion pictures, including IMAX and 3D show times.
