Paver patios look beautiful and require negligible maintenance year-round. However, as with any patio, you still need to take a few simple precautions to protect the space during the brutal winter months. Before you let snow and ice pile up, it’s important to learn how to care for your outdoor space.

3 Ways to Prepare Your Paver Patio for the Winter

1. Fill in Paver Joints

If technicians installed your paver patio more than a few months ago, the sand in between each paver may have settled slightly into the ground. While this isn’t usually a problem, during the winter ice can freeze and re-freeze in the extra space, weakening the pavers’ structure. To prevent the problem, select a dry day this fall to top off the cracks with additional sand.

2. Remove Heavy Items

During this process, concrete may slightly weaken, becoming more vulnerable to cracks and other damage. Areas beneath heavy objects, like barbecues or large potted plants, may be particularly susceptible. To avoid damage, remove bulky items from your patio during winter months.

3. Combat Snow Carefully

When removing snow from your patio this winter, you will want to avoid metal blades, which can scratch your concrete. Instead, use plastic blade protectors or a plastic shovel.

You also may want to use products to aid in traction and prevent freezing. Make sure to avoid magnesium-based products, which are very aggressive and may damage the concrete. Instead, use calcium-based products or rock salt.
