Most trees are solid and sturdy, but sometimes require support in the form of cabling and bracing. Cabling places flexible steel cables between tree branches to redistribute limb weight and provide the trunk with extra support. The latter braces weak tree sections via threaded bolts and rods. If you believe a tree on your property requires cabling and bracing to prevent injuries and damages, take a moment to learn some of the clear signs.

3 Ways to Know When Cabling & Bracing Is Needed

Heavy, Overextended Limbs

Tree branches that are too heavy put pressure on the trunk and can easily break off, potentially resulting in serious injuries and property damage. Overextended limbs are also highly susceptible to any added weight, such as snow and ice, which makes them even more dangerous.

Specific, careful pruning measures in the spring, summer, or winter alleviate this problem while cabling provides the weight redistribution the trunk needs to support the branches. Cabling is strongly recommended over pruning during the fall months because more spores that can hurt your trees are in the air.

Splitting or weak sections of a tree generally call for bracing to keep the woody perennial from becoming a hazard. You may notice splitting or other signs of structural weakness on one or a few branches, as well as on the crotches and truck. Bracing provides a threading action, which holds splitting or otherwise weak sections together.

“V-Crotch” Stems

Tree development can sometimes result in two hulking stems produced from the same trunk section, creating a “V” shape. V-crotch stems must be dealt with immediately to prevent breakage and structural failure, as the stems do not necessarily feature the connective tissue keeping them sturdy and strong. If your tree is young, you can safely remove one of the stems to promote healthy development. Older trees with V-crotch issues generally benefit from cable and bracing.
