With proper irrigation, farmers can keep crops healthy regardless of their distance from the water source. That’s why landowners often turn to sprinkler systems. But with so many options available, how do you know which is right for your land? Below, this guide highlights a few different sprinklers to consider.

4 Sprinkler System Options

1. Hand Move

These sprinklers are attached to PVC or aluminum pipes, which lay horizontally across the ground for at least 30 feet. Each pipe is lateral and spaced about 40 feet from its neighbor. These sprinklers are effective for crops low to the ground.

2. Solid Set

sprinkler systemsAs a more permanent setup, the solid set sprinklers include underground PVC pipes and risers throughout the field. The sprinklers are installed on top, allowing water to reach as far as 40 to 100 feet, depending on the sprinkler head.

3. Mechanical Move

Sprinklers with this system are installed on a machine suspended from hose drops. While these can be close to the ground, they are usually designed to extend to just above the crop itself.

4. Hose Reel

With a large sprinkler attached to a cart and connected to a hose, a tractor can be used to pull this system to the other end of the field. After turning on the water, a reel pulls the cart back and allows the sprinkler to water crops as it moves back to its original spot.
