Owning an RV is exciting—you get to travel and take your home on the road with you but, just like a car, RV’s sometimes need repairs. However, unlike cars, RV repairs are often more complex and can involve multiple manufacturers.  It’s important for you, as an owner, to differentiate how all of this works together.  Here are three types of repairs you need to understand:

3 Common Motorhome Repairs

Manufacturer Warranties:

Most motor homes are made up of two components: the chassis, which contains the transportation/mechanical elements of the vehicle, and the coach, which contains all of the living areas/camping systems of the vehicle.  A chassis is typically delivered to a coach manufacturer.  Any component on the chassis at that point will be covered by the chassis builder’s warranty.  Any component modified or added by the coach builder will be covered by the coach warranty.  The chassis and coach body typically have two separate vehicle identification numbers as well as two different warranty durations.  Warranty coverage is for a limited time frame and usually for a stated number of miles.  These coverage limits are determined by the individual manufacturer.  Figuring out who should cover a warranty repair is troublesome for owners to sort out at times.  At Stephenson Truck Repair, Inc., we can help walk you through the warranty claim process.  We are an authorized warranty provider for multiple chassis manufacturers, including Spartan, Ford and Workhorse.  We also deal with coach builders, on occasion, to get a warranty issue covered.

Recall Items:

There are additional mechanical issues for which recalls can be issued.  When a wide-spread problem is discovered with a particular make/model of vehicle, the manufacturer will often issue a recall either voluntarily or in conjunction with government agencies.  This means that a repair or part swap can be done as a warranty item, most times at no charge to the vehicle owner, regardless of the mileage and age of the unit.  The majority of our warranty repairs fall under this category as a recall/campaign.  The majority of those are done as part of a recall campaign before the owner even realizes there is a problem.  Manufacturers will send literature regarding the repair to the last known owner.  If they don’t have your information, don’t worry.  Our computer systems can alert us of outstanding warranty campaigns on your vehicle.

Normal Maintenance:

The majority of all motorhome maintenance items are the owner’s responsibility.  Following the manufacturer’s guidelines for these can help ensure that you can get warranty coverage should a problem arise in the future.  At Stephenson Truck Repair, Inc., we have very thorough knowledge regarding manufacturer requirements.  They involve things like when to change the oil/filter, what type and weight of oil to use, and when to replace air and fuel filters.
